High livers, who as they grow older, become remorseful and irritable, anxious about health and salvation, suspicious and avoiding people, emotionally sensitive.  Fear of death.  The past history canbe alcohol and sexual excesses, or unsympathetic and suspicious character.  The past later starts tormenting them.  Wake with sensation as if falling (which may be from Cerebral Hypoxia);  slow pulse or pulse slower than apex beat.
  (Lee HOLLAND, BHJ. 4/94)

Hypertension, advanced cases where nothing else helps; as a palliative and only after Ars-alb.
  (J. von MOGER, HG. 9/77)

 DROSERA ROTUNDIFOLIA

Drosera has  reputation as a remedy in cases of Paranoia.
  (D.M.FOUBISTER, BHJ. 1/75)

 DULCAMARA

Poor adaptation to sudden drops of temperature, mainly seen in allergic persons and old people.  “Like Aconite for a Cold in strong, young individuals, Dulcamara for old people with low resistance”.
     (STAUFFER, AHZ. 1995)

The plant grows in damp and shady places, the slender branches climb and trail restlessly over shrubs and hedgerows by twining around any available support.  This urge to keep moving is characteristic also of the Dulcamarapatient.  The juice of the stem and leaves is intensely bitter when first chewed but afterwards leaves a sweet taste in the mouth as the action of the saliva produces Sugar.  Hence the name Amaradulcis, or Bitter Sweet.

The tissue affinities are widespread, namely with mucous membranes, glands, muscles, kidneys and skin, giving rise to inflammatory changes, Catarrh and a tendency to interstitial haemorrhage.  There is also an action on the CNS, inducing at first tetanic spasms with Trismus and later Paralysis, Coma and Death.

The skin tends to be dry, delicate and very sensitive to cold.  It may show an sickly pallor on the face and hands may have  a dusky, purplish hue.  Lips are apt to twitch in cold air, and the mouth may be drawn to one side.  The general appearance may suggest emaciation or there may be puffy swelling of the limbs.

The mental state is restless, irritable, even confused, with difficulty in finding the right word when speaking.  There may be an impatient desire for something which when it is obtained is not wanted after all.  There is an impelling urge to keep constantly on the the move.

Chilly feeling all over with a sensation as if “the hair was bristling”.  Hunger with rupugnance to all food, or easy satiety.  Insatiable, burning thirst for cold drinks.

Drowsiness and yawning during daytime, but sleep disturbed at night by inability to stay long in one position or by frightful dreams.  Perspiration excessive and offensive.

Modalities are important.  Aggravation from every change in Weather, Warm to Cold, Dry to Wet and especially sudden change as when a hot sultry day is followed by a cold night; also proximity to water or damp surroundings.  Amel. dry even-temperatured weather, warmth; also by frequent changes of posture or by keeping on the move.  Standing erect amel.

Paralysis may occur at various sites and the affected parts feel icy cold.  There may be unilateral spasms. Alternation of symptoms. Catarrhal or asthmatic conditions alternate with skin eruptions or with rheumatism.

Vertigo with trembling, and a liability to fall.  Things go black before the eyes.

A variety of headaches; may be associated with much heaviness, mental confusion and nausea, all made worse by movement, talking or walking - a contrary modality to that usually seen in this remedy.  Headache may be located in one particular spot as if it were being pressed on firmly by a blunt instrument.  Headache with stiffness in the nape and a feeling as if the neck was broken.  Earache in children associated with nausea persists all night, preventing sleep, but lets up quickly in the morning.

Post-nasal discharge is common, with a tendency to downward spread and involvement of the chest evidenced by oppressed breathing, respiration clogged by mucous, various pains in chest, especially behind the sternum, and possibly sharp darting pain in the left chest.

Winter coughs, clear up in summer.  Rather curiously the coughs are also worse in a warm room and better in open air.

Stiffness and discomfort of the tongue and the jaw muscles produces a sensation of paresis and makes speech difficult.

Excessive saliva, sticky, soap-like, foul.  Causes frequent spitting or swallowing and tendency to keep scraping the throat.

Considerable nausea with positive disgust for food in any form.  Diarrhoea from suppressed eruptions or from being chilled when hot; tend to become chronic.  Preceded by rumbling and pain around the navel.  The pains are relieved by stools but the patient is left exhausted and weak.  Facial Urticaria before the periods, which are late and usually heavy.

Urgent urination from getting chilled, even loss of Sphincter control.

The remedy may be called for in acute or chronic Nephritis associated with Anasarca.

Worse exposure to cold and wet.  The limbs become terribly heavy, perhaps with an icy-cold feeling.  Fingers so stiff, can hardly be moved.  Limbs feel paralysed and useless.  Cramps.  Inflamed, tender joints; movement gives relief and the patient keeps changing position.

Herpetic, miliary or urticarial eruptions; although brought on by cold; often worse by warmth.  Itching and pricking in various sites, sometimes without any eruption; this tends to be worse on expsure to cold air, eg., when undressing.  No relief from scratching.

 DYSENTERY CO.

Bleed and bruise easily.  Ailments after Dysentry (BLACKIE cured a case of Arthritis on this.).
  (Richard LAING, BHJ. 1/95)

Soft-hearted; worry about things and state of the world.  Anxious ‘unsettled in stomach’ before going on holiday - may be with Diarrhoea.  Sort of panic: likes to sit at ends of rows; peculiar faint feeling if they went into a restaurant and couldn’t get out easily.
Painful joints, worse movement.  Sub-acute pains with swelling.  Arthritis.
   (J. D. SOMPER, BHJ. 2/85)

Apprehensive stress, mainly affecting the autonomic nervous system and a nightly  (2 - 3 a.m.) aggravation.
   (C.O.KENNEDY, BHJ. 3/88)

For dyspeptic symptoms especially in patients who appeared to be constitutional Arsenic types  -  Growing pains and involvement of the cardiac muscles.  Patients who would benefit often had a peculiar white skin and tended to blush very easily.  But that is not surprising since the keynote is “nervous tension”.
  (T.Fergus STEWART, JAIH. Jan-Feb/1966)

Tense, anxious, restless, fidgety, timid and uneasy amongst strangers.  Easily upset by criticism.  Dislike of enclosed spaces.  Frontal headaches from excitement.

Unstable circulation, blushing and a pink and white appearance.

Spasm of the Pylorous, dilatation of the Stomach, vomiting and pain often at 1 a.m.  Duodenal ulcer.  Pyloric Stenosis, where spasm predominates rather that mechanical obstruction.  Where pain follows after nervous tension or anticipatory excitement.
   (Hamish W BOYD, BHJ. 1/78)

Nervous tension and apprehension, dread and fear of failure before an ordeal of some sort.  The feeling of tension is often referred to the region of the Heart or Stomach.

Shy and uneasy among strangers.  Oversensitive to criticism.  Physical nervousness, fidgets, can’t keep still, even Chorea.  Pyloric spasm with Indigestion and Heartburn due to reflux of acid stomach contents into the Oesophagus.  Vomiting with relief of pain.
