CACTUS GRANDIFLORA

In cardiac ailments:  ‘Desire to swallow large doses of medicine’,  ‘Shrieking with the pains’ (Acon., Bell., Cact., Cham., Coff.)  are useful indicators, rather than Anxiety and Fear common in heart conditions.  With these, the typical sense of constriction.  Not to be used on pathological indications alone for heart.
(Lee HOLLAND, BHJ. 4/94)

A good remedy for children who will not venture to do anything as long as someone is looking at them.      (DG)

 CADMIUM SULPHURICUM

BOGER says that Cadmium sulph. is equal to, or better than, Solidago in the backache of Nephritis.
This remedy (Cadmium sulph.) has three outstanding symptoms.

1.  The patient wants someone to kill him.  (He does not want to kill himself)

2.  Always chilly, even in hot weather and wants to be near a stove or fire to keep warm.

3.  Severe trembling.
    (Benj. GOLDBERG, JAIH. Mar-Apr. 1966)

 CALADIUM SEGUINUM

Pruritus Ani and Pruritus Vulvae are indications of sexual unconscious conflicts in many cases.  Caladium in low potency helps some of these patients (Nat. mur. high potency helps others.)
    (E.K.LEDERMANN, HG. 7/70)

Dazed and melancholic, they live in a permanent cloud of smoke that masks the thorny reality outside.      (DG)

 CALCAREA ARSENICOSA

Desire for soup.  Migraines occurring once a week and Albumin during pregnancy.
     (DG)

 CALCAREA BROMATA
  Insomnia in teething.     (DG)

 CALCAREA CARBONICA

Remember  obstinacy of Calcarea carbonica.  They begin thinking about something in the evening and continue during the night and prepare everything for the discussion the next day.  Then they choose an inappropriate moment to bring up the subject, for example, in the morning at breakfast when everybody is in a hurry.  Consider a patient’s words: “I think and do whatever I believe and feel is right and I try to assert myself with others, but this paralyses  me.  Arguments paralyze me.  I think a lot about events.  I always have to justify myself, my life, how I live.”
     (Anne SHADDE, HL. 2/95)

May wish to die, out of despair about their condition, shed tears of despair.  But not a strong suicidal disposition.
    (G.VITHOULKAS, HL. 2 & 3/94)

Responsible persons, hard-working, take on more and more tasks, because ‘someone has to do it, and it won’t get done unless I do it.’ (Sulph., egoistical competitiveness;  Nux-v. must rise up to the challenge).

Slow careful; pay attention to the minutest detail in which they get caught and chaos results.  This becomes ‘too much’. They are overwhelmed, since their focus is on the small details, the overview is lost.

Sensitive and sympathetic, want all to be happy, all to be well.

Overwork causes a gradual fatigue, they are unable to cope, feel like falling apart.  Anxiety about health arises. ‘I have got all this to do, to take care of all these details; if I were to become sick, what would happen then.’

The wife may become irritable with her husband and children because they leave the house in a mess and she likes order.  She feels people are not co-operating.  (Should not be confounded with Sepia).  The inability to cope may  result in an aversion to their work, they just want to give up, merely because they are exhausted.

The confusion from having to do too much work in detail evokes a fear their minds will break down, fear that others will find this out, hence averse to have people looking over their shoulders while they are working.  Calcareachildren won’t dare to lie or make up a story, because they are sure mother will find out.

They may withdraw with a passive despair of recovery, get depressed, want to be in a dark room loose interest in their appearance etc.  Unless the antecedent state is carefully enquired about, one may mistake a Calcarea forSepia!  Weak lumbar region, complain sit upright for long.  The craving for sweets and salt is a good indication, but now the craving for eggs is not as common as before, I do not know why!  An empty feeling in the stomach; they eat for this rather than real hunger.

Feet cold at night, put on socks (or cover up feet) which soon heat up, have to remove covers (in feet).
Multiple fears (Ars., Calc., Caust., Phos.)

Calcarea children easily get short of breath while playing, get hot and sweaty.  They often get too warm in bed and kick off covers (not always Puls. or Sulph. can be Calcarea too).

Dizzy and fear of falling when descending stairs.  Partly out of clumsiness.
    (Jonathan SHORE, BHJ. 3/94)

You know the description in the books of a Calcarea “Sitting solidly and bending pins”.  They will do one stupid, finicky, little thing.  The last acute Calcarea I saw undid and shut up her bag the entire time she was there and this nearly drove me mad!

No guts at all.  You feel they have no stuffing and that it is very difficult to press them into doing anything sensible.

Deep depression; but I do not think that Calcarea patient ever commit suicide.  I do not think they have it in them at all.

They drip silent tears although they are not obviously sobbing.

Cannot express themselves; cannot say what they just did or what they read.  Can appear stupid and sometimes are.

Adult Calcareas can look a bit unlike Calcarea.  They can be so thin and worn looking, scraggy.  Often something else, for example, the fear that they are being observed and commented upon, clinches the Calcarea.
   (M.G.BLACKIE, BHJ. 4/78)

They are sorry for themselves and rather hopeless.  If at all they can be induced to speak of their difficulties  they go over and over the same story and can bore their family and friends by their constant repetition.  They are very sensitive to criticism.  If their school teachers tell them that they always get things wrong, that they are stupid and don’t try, they go home bathed in tears; no loud sobbing, but tears just trickling down their faces.  If not well, they are apt to become particularly spineless.  They tend to be worriers about their family, neighbours, and just anything.
   (M.G.BLACKIE, BHJ. 1/75)

After vaccinations, when the child becomes whiny and fussy, Calcarea carbonicum is useful.
    (Peggy CHIPKIN, HT. Nov./92)

The healthy patient is red, warm, moist, round, taut, strong and lovable.  Skin and mucous membranes are well supplied with blood.  The sick Calcarea child is rather small, clumsy, everything is too big - head, fontanelles, eyes, bloated face, protruding cracked upper lips, mouth, tongue and swollen abdomen.  On hairy persons, in the common  face and buttocks appear dermal changes (exudative diathesis).  Tonsils and Adenoids, large Lymphatic Glands, Polyps (lymphatic diathesis) .  Everything is delayed; sitting, standing, running, and sensitive, whimsical, lacking appetite and indigestion, Eenuresis, sleep disturbances and school difficulties (neuropathic diathesis).  Very thirsty for lots of cold water.
    (M.DORCSI, LIGA. 1995)

Children
Mothers sometimes report that they sweat on the face while nursing.  They can appear robust, yet while playing, will tire before the other children do.  The appetite can be erratic: strong one day, non-existent the next, can have intolerance to milk, even mother’s, and when unwell they should avoid milk, can also have intolerance to sugar like Argentum nitricum.

They suffer from ear and travel sickness and prefer to stay home.

They can sit peacefully playing as long as they know there is someone around.  They tend to be afraid of going to sleep in a room without a light and when unwell, develop nightmares and wake screaming.
In children, frequent repetition of Calcarea favours rapid improvement, rather than waiting after a single dose.
     (Janet ZAND, JAIH. 1/89)

Respiration blocked in the throat a very short time so that expiration is plopping.  Some Calcarea patient produce a very short glottal stop on expiration which produces a panting or gasping sound.
    (Tinus SMITS, JAIH. 1/90)

Do not prescribe to someone who has no apprehension or fear of anything.
    (Thomas PASCHERO, HG. 6/80)

 CALCAREA OSTREARUM

  Thyroid, pituitary dysfunction.

  Produces and cures goitres.

Great remedy for very shy people.

Very much indicated in convalescences that are not getting on and for patients who continually relapse.

Cannot stand fasting or skipping a meal.  Yet worse after meals.

Calcarea infants sometimes have enormous stools, and one wonders how it is possible for infants to expel such stools.

When a patient who smokes suddenly loses his taste for cigars or cigarettes, think of Calcarea.  This remedy loves good wine, liquors, cold drinks but on the other hand prefers milk very hot!
  Loves salty and sour things.

  Suffers from polyps and exostoses.
    (Pierre SCHMIDT, HG. 6/77)

The main mental symptom is fear (fear of dark, of dogs, of illness)    (DG)

 CALCAREA FLOURICA

It has the inertia of Calcium carbonate and the over-sweetness of Calcium phoshoricum.  Boasting, cunning and cowardice; hardening and brutalisation of character.  Hydroflouric acid is one of the most poisonous and destructive acids.  The skin is withered, inelastic, dry with deep purulent Ulcers, Eczemas, Fistulas, Horny skin, Scars, Keloids, Scirrhus.

  Glands enlarged and hardened.

Poorly healing ulcers of the mucous membrane, Paradontosis.  Phlebitis. Bones and ligaments are infected, decomposed and destroyed. Carcinomas and Sarcoma.  Stiff spine.
    (M.DORCSI, LIGA. 1995)

Indecision is characteristic, more so in relation to insignificant matters than to important issues.
Sleep disturbed by nightmares; awakes suddenly as if threatened by immediate danger.  History of syphillis, congenital or acquired.

Creaking or straining sounds in the head, especially at night.

Spots or sparks in vision, after writing; eyeballs painful, amel. closing eyes and pressing firmly.

Paraoxysmal stabbing pains in the right hypochondrium, under the 7th rib, wakes up the patient about midnight.  Worse lying on affected side, agg. sitting, amel. lying down at night; it may come on at about 8 a.m.

  Diarrhoea in gouty subjects.

Low back pains from the least strain, worse rest, better motion and warmth, joints crack or develop a chronic Hydrarthrosis.
    (D.M.GIBSON, HG. 1/73)

The key symptom of this remedy is fear of poverty.  From very early on, the child is interested in money, follows the stock market and the value of dollar, is curious about accounting and often becomes expert in that field.      (DG)

 CALCAREA PHOSPHORICUM

This is considered one of the great adolescent remedies.  It is often reported that they were fat and flabby when very young but now in their teens, are above average height and have long legs rather than long backs.  They have damp hands and feet and if you touch their faces they are cold and clammy.

Mentally they are difficult to differentiate from Phosphorous and Silica Calcarea phosphorica is mentally tired and gives numerous signs of it.  They have weak memories and poor concentration, and disappointingly poor school reports.  When tired they react with irritability, and you think of Chamomilla  You can feel it even if the patient does not show it.

Choosy about food, particularly when shocked and anxious.  They can easily get a disordered stomach causing pain and diarrhoea and are apt to be upset by ice cream and fruits.

They often have the Calcarea weakness and trembling, and can get a lot of rheumatism in their legs and feet which sometimes go hand in hand with a sudden collapse when apparently getting on well.  They are better for warmth and rest.  They have a real aggravation from talking which is very characteristic of this type of adolescent.  They do not want to have to stop and speak to people but like to wander round looking at things and to go where they like.  They are very restless.  They are apt to get into a state of distress about everything.  They can become resentful that they have been sent to the wrong school, resentful over family; that they have made the wrong friends.

Teenage headaches; brought on by intense mental application, or from exposure to cold as from driving in a car in the wind.  The first is better for bathing the head in cold water.  All headaches are worse for jar and pressure.  With the headache, if you happen to feel the patient’s head it is cold and clammy.

A rare symptom which I have met a number of times is that these patients with headaches feel that ice is lying at the back of the occiput and at the root of the hair.  They are apt to get coryza in a cold room and are then better for warmth.
   (M.G.BLACKIE, BHJ. 1/75)

Usually demonstrate an area in their life from which they are hiding, mostly teenagers.
  (R.D.CALCOTT, BHJ. 1/75)

Children: Everything comes too soon:  birth, sitting, standing.

Mental and physical exhaustion, weakness of learning, and concentration abilities, school headaches.  Nightly need for small gulps of cold water.  Careless, jumpy, untaxable behaviour.

  Sleep disturbances; Jactatio capitis.

Longitudinal skull.  Deep-set, big black eyes.  Sour smelling discharges.  Eczema of whole body.  Upper respiratory tract catarrhs.  Bone and joint pains; back ache; Kyphoscoliosis.
  (M.DORCSI, LIGA. 1995)

“I have missed, in my haste, more back troubles, more sacroiliacs, more neuralgic and sciatics that should have been Calcarea phosphorica”.  So never forget Calcarea phosphorica in the nape of the neck and cervical regions, and the sacroiliac regions.
  (E.W.HUBBARD, HG. 1/80)

He is a slow starter, but he makes up for it.  He begins with the trifling weakness of Calcarea but he develops some of the brilliance of Phosphorous and in the end approaches the mental range of Tuberculinum.
  (E.W.HUBBARD, HG. 6/78)

Much involuntary sighing; child may scream and grasp head with hands.  Old people stagger about on rising from sitting.  Is a slow starter, but may have spurts of brilliance.  Has a bad temper, wants to be left alone, contrary: when out-of-doors wants to return home, when at home wants to go out.

Has a desire for change of scene; must be carefully watched, as the child may show an almost insane desire to go off alone.

Mental or emotional strain or stress may precipitate an illness.

  A really hot bath ameliorates.

Headaches in children from watching T.V.

  Numbness, locally or generally.
  (D.M.GIBSON, HG. 8/72)

Calcarea phosphorica are sensitive to injustice. “It’s not fair!” these children say constantly.  They desire to travel, but become anxious as soon as the family nest is too far away.         (DG)

 CALCAREA SULPHURICA

The child tends to be overweight.  One of the things I connect with their appearance is a sort of rough, red eruption on the cheeks which looks almost as if it had been glazed.  On the whole the skin is dry, yet there may be perspiration head and feet which will be cold, but the feet burn and itch in bed at night, the child kicking off the bedclothes, or getting the feet out into the cool as both Calcarea carbonica and Sulphur do.

Liable to boils, pimples and infected skin lesions.  Tendency to thick, purulent discharge from inflammation of eyelids, nose and ears.  Cracks and fissures develop in cold weather; in spite of the burning and itching at night, the patient is generally sensitive to cold, the parts are cold, yet many symptoms are better in open air.
   (K.G.PRIESTMAN, BHJ. 2/76)

I find Calcarea sulphuricum 6 an extremely useful remedy for acne and which as you know pushes the infection to the surface and so very often finishes it.
   (M.G.BLACKIE, BHJ. 2/76)

As jealous as Lachesis, as malicious as Nitric acid, as irritable and worse from contradiction as Lycopodium, as obstinate as Calcarea carbonica, as quarrelsome as Hyoscyamus, and as mortified as Staphysagria.

In children, Calcarea has to be differentiated from Tarentula and Tuberculinum.  All the three remedies can: Desire eggs, sweets, salt and indigestibles.

Like music and dancing.

Perspire on the scalp.

Be hot, and want to play in cold water.

Be obstinate - if anything is refused lie down on the floor and cry loudly.

Beat parents and be violent.

Display jealousy.

Catch recurrent colds and coughs.

Self esteem is an important issue in Calcarea sulphuricum but they are not sure of their worth and depend upon others to affirm their esteem and value.  A feeling that they are getting less than others provokes jealousy.
  (Kees DAM, SIM. 1/93)

Cough, choking and rattly, with considerable hoarseness and a lot of phlegm, better for throwing off the clothes and in the open air, which distinguishes it from Hepar sulphuricum as the later is extremely sensitive to cold.
   (M.G.BLACKIE, BHJ. 1/75)

 CALENDULA

To prevent perineal tears during labor, prepare the perineum 5 weeks before birth, with regular Calendula hot packs.  (2 teaspoon of the mother tincture on a wet flannel placed on the perineum, with a heated pad on top).  This encourages softness and flexibility of the part.  These packs also help healing a perineal tear, given along with a 30 potency.
   (Ananda ZAREN, HL. 2 & 3/94)

 CALOTROPIS GIGANTEA

Characteristics:

  1. Tired and depressed.
  2. Occipital headache from 11 a.m. to midnight, + worse evening.
  3. Head and face hot, cheeks burn like fire; lips and throat dry.
4 .Foul breath; moving jaws painful.
  5. Constant eructations.
  6. Frequent urination; urine dark red, strong smelling.
  7. Short breath and oppression.
  8. Frequent chills passing up spine.
  9. Restless sleep.
10. Sensation of warmth in the Scrobiculus Cordis.
11. Heat and burning in the stomach and intestines.
12. Fevers due to suppurating foci.
13. Discoloration of the skin; non-healing wounds or Ulcers; Leprosy;
Secondary Syphillis.  Disfiguration of skin; Scars left by Wounds and
  Ulcers; Gangrenous Ulcers.

 CAMPHORA

In chronic disease, corresponding to authoritarian personalities, jealous individuals who fear neither God nor Man.  Even though they have chosen to “live by the sword”, they still fear death.  This is an important remedy where death is near: collapse, intense diarrhoea.
    (DG)

 CANNABIS INDICA

Gestures typical of this remedy are soft movements, very slow, very gently.  Vertigo as if one is swaying.
  (Anne SHADDE, HL. 2/95)

Extremely articulate about what happened to them and what is going on inside them.  They have a tremendous capacity to describe the reasons for their distress; why things happened the way they did,  why they reacted as they did, etc.  Their specific expressions like ‘I am in grief’, ‘I’m overwhelmed’ or ‘my mind has given out’ etc. may lead to prescriptions like Phos-ac. or Sepia.  But the manner of articulation of all the explanations for their life events should be recognised as being consistent with  one great characteristic of Cann-i.- Theorizing.  Such theorizing about one’s own psychological processes is highly typical of Cann-i.

They are nice people and like to think that the remedies have helped them.  They offer all sorts of theories about why the remedy helped them and then what happened and why they are now in another state.

It is interesting to see how composed most Cannabis indica patients are during the interview.  They talk in a logical way for the most part, but what they describe are very confused lives.  Sometimes, during the interview, this confusion is just not apparent in the patients or their description of themselves, but when their lives are examined, tremendous confusion is strikingly apparent.  Addictive behaviour is also very common in Cannabis indica, but history of Marijuana use is not necessary to prescribe it.  But children whose parents have used much Marijuana often need the remedy.
  (Roger MORRISON, JAIH. 2/93)

A beatific state; grandiose ideas; wonderful theories, thrillingly prolific mind; enthusiastic to a point of exaltation and clairvoyance.
  (E.W.HUBBARD, HG. 6/78)

Confronted with the complete incommunicability of everything they are experiencing, young Cannabis indica individuals cannot find their identity.
In reality, Cannabis indica is in a border state, and is faced with a great temptation to cross the line and return to a primitive, fusional love, at the risk of becoming completely lost within it.      (DG)

 CAPSICUM ANNUUM

Lazy, lie down all day, irritated if remarked on this.  Put on weight within a very short period.  Stomach feels like an empty bag.  (Here if Calc. is given wrongly for the obesity, they’ll put on more weight!) Nostalgia, lives in the past.  This may grow into a Neurosis, with Delusions that he/she is living in the past (instead of understanding that he/she is living in the present and only thinking of the past.). Children shiver a moment after drinking.  Coldness < soseverelythattheybecomesad. coldnessinscrotum.(mayoccuringonorrhoea)
  (Vassilis GHEGAS, HL. 4/94)

Children of parents who had overstimulated or over-drugged themselves in the past.  Awkward, stumbling, inactive, introverted.  Just sit reading or watching TV  Do not want to break such as divorce, another child born in the family, changing furniture.  Capsicum uncleanliness is due to dislike of change.  Will not participate in sports.  Obese and chilly (Calc., Graph.) plus burning everywhere (Capsicum). Drink too much coffee, then nauseated, urethral burning > local heat (Ars.)
  (Guy KOKELENBERG, BHJ. 2/95)

Childhood obesity - secondary to Bullimia; with thin legs, the child is fat and clumsy.
  (J. LAMOTHE, Homœopathie, 1988)

Capsicum is not chilly as stated in many Materia Medica, but aggravated by cold and slightest draft, which is an important note to remember.

These people love routine and hate anything unexpected.  Write it in your repertory under the heading ‘Unexpected, aversion to anything’.  If you tell them that you will take them on a drive tomorrow, they won’t like that at all.  You will have to tell them long in advance.

Great difficulty getting going out or to go on a drive or a walk.  They hate all exercise and effort.  And yet, amelioration once they start to walk.

Capsicum is an overworked intellectual who doesn’t eat enough and is always in need of stimulants and tonics.  Dyspepsia of elderly people.

Funnily, this patient is thirsty after stool, Scrotum cold in the morning on waking.

Like Ammonium carbonicum, not very fond of cleanliness.  Dirty clothes, their ties have spots on them and they are improperly washed or shaven! Ugh!

Constantly dissatisfied and complaining.  Hates drafts.

Explosive coughs: as if everything were going to explode: head, ears, bladder, chest.

Sciatica agg. coughing.  Hoarse, raucous voice of public speakers, singers etc.
   (Pierre SCHMIDT, HG. 6/77)

Paradise lost: that is the key to this remedy.  Always looking back at what has been left behind, Capsicum misses out on life and ruins the present.  This produces a tendency toward obesity.  These are plump, red faced children who do not react to remedies.  They are dare devils, reckless like Pulsatilla and Aurum.      (DG)

 CARBO VEGETABILIS

The general defence mechanism of the body is set in motion by Carbo vegetabilis, possibly in the Reticulo-endothelial system, whose detoxifying action, like in the Liver, and the storage qualities of this system are enhanced.

We give Carbo veg. when there is residual intoxication or when chronic toxic states persist.  That means, most follow-up treatment after severe diseases calls for Carbo veg.  Flu sequelaes, Asthma, Emphysema, Chronic ulcers e.g.Ulcera cruris, CVA, RHD, etc.

I know one Homœopathic pharmaceutical company in Germany, which combines Carbo veg. and Veratrum album, as circulatory booster for shock in traffic accidents.  Unfortunately, Demerol or Morphine are given to combat pain, thus lowering the BP even further down.  The quickest way is IV glucose, plasma or a blood transfusion, a method HAHNEMANN could not have known.

For collapse or detoxification, the higher potencies are called for; for Gastritis, Hyperacidity and gas trouble, the lower ones.

Hoarseness comes on as a fatigue syndrome of the Larynx in the evening, after exposure to damp weather (Causticum wakes voiceless in the morning, with Bronchitis.)

It has a place in the treatment of Asthma - old leftovers such as chronic Nephritis, Ulcers etc.  Asthmatics with thick mucous expectoration and exhaustion.

Though there is a need for cool air to breathe, the patient is chilly.  The coldness in knees and elbows wake him out of sleep.  Acrocyanosis.

The already toxic Carbo veg. system should not be overloaded with further toxins such as Tobacco and Alcohol.  These give him Dyspepsia, Haemorrhoids, Aphthae etc. which are helped by Carbo veg.  The chronic debilitated patient may further need China.

Upper abdominal gas pressure - the so-called Gastrocardial symptom-complex of Roenhild causing Extrasystole following heavy meals.

This is the first remedy in food poisoning, especially if the patient is nauseous as soon as he tries to sit up in bed, the morning after.

In summary:

1. A chilly remedy, damp skin, cold breath and extremeties.

2. A remedy for collapse in severe illnesses, CVA, Typhus, Myocarditis,

Palpitations, where the patient wants to be fanned and the windows opened.

3. Pulmonary oedema
  a. with Ventricular failure
  b. due to Asthma
  c.due to Chronic Nephritis

4. Hyperacid gastritis, tympanic abdomen (low potency)

5. Stomatitis aphthosa and Gingivitis.

6. Chronic venous congestions and Capillary Cyanosis, such as:
  a.Haemorrhoids, chronic, thrombosed and oozing.
b.Ulcera Cruris (where Calc-c. is also required).

The pain is always burning.  The secretions smell bad.  The bleeding is congestive.

Stools: tenesmus, diarrhoea and  burning.

Menses: too early, too much, odorous, painful to start.

The condition get worse toward evenings, after fatty food, in damp, warm climate
.

The indifference of Carbo veg. arises because of Cerebral Hypoxia.

Cough when going from warm to cold room (Bryonia on entering warm room)
Headaches: postprandial, occipital.  The whole head feels extended.
  (Frederic W. SCHMIDT, HG. 2/77)

When smoked too much or lived in a smoke filled environment during the intra-uterine period, then we will be sensitive to this element and will display little or no reaction to other remedies.  Addiction to Tobacco: take Carbovegetabilis.     (DG)

 CARCINOSIN

Consolation > but does not let others know his troubles (hence no change for consolation).  Anticipatory anxiety that things should go perfectly.
Numb fingers due to spondylitis.

Six main mentals:
Fastidious.
Sensitive to reprimand and offence.
Yielding.
Artistic.
Anxious.
Desires travel.

Six main physicals:
Blue sclerae.
Cafe-au-lait complexion.
Desires Fat, Milk, Chocolate, Eggs.
Lies on abdomen.
Many Moles or Birthmarks.
Many infectious diseases.
  (HL. 2 & 3/94)

The darkness about the energy that we see in Medorrhinum and Tuberculinum is completely absent in Carcinosin.

They will never manifest malicious cruelty.  Concern and regard for others is fundamental and often forms the source of its pathology.

The Carcinosin patients relationship to sexuality is emotional rather than genital.

The fastidiousness of Carcinosin is the result of rigidity, a need to control, that stems from the patient’s knowledge that he/she is sitting upon a wildfire that is potentially all- consuming if not strictly contained.  It is the same sensation that generates a fearful reaction when sickness arises or that is the root of the fear of Cancer.  Deep down, the patient knows that there is a pathological time-bomb ticking inside.  The Fastidiousness is an attempt to control it.  Put another way, the Fastidiousness is a valiant effort to keep mortality at bay.

It is often said that the Carcinosin Fastidiousness arises out of a desire to please.  This is not definitely so in my experience and this point would distinguish Carcinosin from Staphysagria, which is not fastidious.  Nevertheless, the desire to please is there out of the sensitivity to reprimand and sympathy, the Carcinosin patient is often quite adept at conforming to the expectations of those around (One of my patients said at the second follow-up: “My masks are gone, I don’t have to perform anymore”).

Prolonged unhappiness, domination by others or abuse (physical or sexual) form the aetiological factors; but brutalication is not a prerequisite.  Life’s ordinary traumas are often sufficient suffering.  Even in the face of such extraordinary suffering, the Carcinosin patient seems not to resist.  It is hard to distinguish from Staphysagria.  To me it seems that Staphisagria resists confrontation because the organism is simply too sensitive to tolerate the anger of others and does everything to avoid situations where that
might arise.  The Staphysagria child does not have the ebullient energy of Carcinosin and the occassional outbursts to which it is prone.

  (Don WEBLEY, SIM. 3/92)

Incarcerated within themselves, these patients turn their aggression inward and suffer from allergies, insomnia and eventually Cancer.    (DG)

 CASTANEA VESCA

Dry, ringing, persistent, repetitive cough, occurring in spasms. (Cocc-c., but this has a lot more congestion).

 CAULOPHYLLUM

There has been some correspondence in the BMJ on the role of Prostaglandins and Dysmenorrhoea (PICKLES, 1975). A Danish GP had found by accident that Indomethacin had a beneficial effect on Dysmenorrhoea, and his finding was supported by an English doctor. (HILL, 1973).  Prof. PICKLES as far back as 1967 had suggested that the painful periods were due to abnormal Prostaglandin activity, and NSAIDs might be of value. Recent work in Bristol has shown that the concentration of some Prostaglandins in the tissues is in the order of 10 [k1] (-9) or 9X in homoeoepathic jargon.  It is not surprising that when NASH used the 3X, he got an unwanted result.  So, treat the Rheumatism with Indomethacin and the Dysmenorrhoea is cured. Treat the Dysmenorrhoea with Caulophyllum, and the Rheumatism is cured.  There must be a common factor.  Could Prof. PICKLES’ suggestion of Prostaglandins be the answer‌  But as the output of literature on Prosaglandins probably exceeds 200 papers annually (HIBBARD, 1975), it needs a whole-time specialist to keep in touch with current developments in this field.

 CAUSTICUM

Children: Causticum is not exclusively for children suffering from severe handicaps such as Cystic Fibrosis, Encephalopathy or Chromosomal abnormalities, but also for common paediatric pathologies like Glue ear, Asthma and Eczema.

Crying at the least thing, but sometimes can be bossy and bad tempered.

Worse by separation, change of way of life.

  Ticklish.

  Bowel and bladder training delayed.
  (J. LAMOTHE, L’Homeopathie Francaise, 1989)

Generally being used only for the elderly and for handicapped children; but is an important paediatric remedy.  The sensitive ‘type’ (as described in the Materia Medica) is important but has no great value in prescribing.  Thepathogenic symptoms are more important.  Such characteristics as large abdomen, thin, hypotonias flat feet, hallux valgus, hernias, sweet nature, generosity, tolerance and happiness indicate the sensitive type of Causticum but are not important for prescription.  Essential symptoms in paediatrics: Frightened of real or imaginary dangers.  Alternating moods: good - irritable.  Although happy and gentle, offers frequent opposition.

Late walking.

Stammering.

Dysphonia.

Lack of sphincter control.

Clumsy, uncoordinated e.g. in sports.

Chronic constipation.

Chronic productive cough, Otitis with serous discharges, associated with Warts.
Hypersensitive to cold baths. Desires Salt, averse to Sugar.

Thirst but good appetite.
  (Jacques LAMOTHE, CGH. XXX  )

The Causticum state may arise out of abuse - childhood or otherwise unlike Staphysagria, not an iota of anger is suppressed.  They present with indignation, righteous anger and an inability to tolerate the least bit of oppression.  Where Staphysagria seems to invite oppression, Causticum seems to see oppression - most often interpreted as injustice against themselves or others - in every situation and rebels agianst it.  Causticum enables these patients to deal with oppressive situations in a helathy way.
   (Roger MORRISON, JAIH. 2/93)

Symptoms may come or after much watching with consequent loss of sleep, as the after effects of an exhausting illness or from a sudden shock or a long-lasting grief or worry.

Remarkably restless, just cannot lie or sit still for long; indeed, finds no ease in any position and obtains no relief either from moving about.

Burning thirst for cold drinks but paralytic weakness of the muscles of deglutition causes choking on swallowing.

Stiffness; then actual Contractures and Deformity; Ankylosis.

The remedy is seldom called for in acute conditions; but has been found of value in Bell’s Palsy.
   (D.M.GIBSON, HG. 9/76)

Large Warts near the edge of the finger nails.  At times dictatorial, they can play on their weakness in order to maintain those around them under their domination.  (DG)

 CENCHRIS CONTORTRIX

Cenchris shows itself in problems of the throat, heart and female reproductive system.  Dreamy absent-mindedness and changing moods with Anxiety, Jealousy, quarrelsomeness, sighing and great suspiciousness.  Dreams can be very vivid and horrible and the patient will not be able to shake them off after waking.  Like many snake remedies, Cenchris sees visions and hears voices.  They can have Delusions of being in two places at the same time and of time passing too slowly.

In the throat there is difficulty with empty swallowing which is much better with food or liquid (unlike Lachesis and Vipera).  Tight clothing is unberable and choking is so bad, they must lie with their head thrown back.  Hard, dry tickling cough, worse at 3 p.m.

The whole body feels enlarged to bursting points; the heart feels distended so as to fill the whole chest.  Clothes feel heavy on the shoulders. Palpitations, restlessness, suffocation.

Yellowish Leucorrhoea, Menorrhagia and right-sided ovarian pain.  Throbbing in Vulva and herpetic eruptions there.

There is a characteristic swelling above the Eyes and beneath, like bags of water.  Blindness can occur.  They are cold in bed when not clothed especially the nates.
  (Mary Lynn GARNER, SIM. 3/91)

Cenchris dreams of witnessing a rape. “Dispute under jealousy”.    (DG)

 CHAMOMILLA

Weak contractions during labor;  irritable, ‘I can’t do it’.
  (Ananda ZAREN, HL. 2 & 3/94)

If teeth are extracted under Novocain - to overcome the effects of Novocain.
(A.  Dwight SMITH, JAIH. May-June 1962)

Chamomilla cannot tolerate meteorological Storms, and is afraid of the Wind.  Sour smelling perspiration covers the head.  The patient is better when carried, rocked or in a moving car.      (DG)

Helplesss, despondent, weepy.  More hopeless than melancholy.  They get an awful feeling of anticipation and that they cannot cope with life and  full of dreads that anything might happpen.  They are terrified of what it might be.  If they have had any worry everything sort of sticks to that.  Thay make it the sort of the centre of their depression and brood over it.  Even sometimes when it is long past and there is nothing to worry about now, they go back and brood over this matter, cannot bear to be disturbed and are very irritable if anyone comes in and they do not want to talk.  They are extremely difficult to talk to.  You try to help and you do not get a word out of them, even when they have come for help as patients.  It is difficult to find what they are grumbling about.  The only bit of luck is if they tell you they have a certain amount of pain over their Liver or Gall Bladder region which is extremely painful to touch.
  (M.G.BLACKIE, BHJ. 4/78)

The pains usually rouse the patient from sleep.
  (HUI BON BOA, BHJ. 3/77)

Strabismus from Sixth Nerve Palsy.  Use 6 C.
   (R.D. CALCOTT, BHJ. 1/75)

In Pneumonia, Pleurisy or Bronchitis with a pleuritic component, the pains are worse lying on the painful side.  This rules out Bryonia Chelidonium shares many symptoms in this sphere with Bryonia, and one often tends to prescribe Bryonia in the place of Chelidonium.
  (George GUESS, JAIH. 4/91)

Asthma during a change in the weather.  Flaring nostrils accompanying the breathing, and the ill-person feels better when lying down.  The persons become depressed about the present and future.  They never try to understand the situation they face.  Baldness in the occipital region.  Individuals who worry themselves sick.      (DG)

 CHINA OFFICIANALIS

Very sensitive people, must be approached softly and contacted at a deep level (like the physical level  >  from deep pressure)
They can be haughty people who insist on buying the best of everything: normal things not good enough, only the fine and expensive ones are.
  (HL. 2 &3/94)
Strong desire to buy and possess things of very high quality.  Like to express their feelings through Poetry, fine Music and Painting.

 CHLORALUM

Retarded motor development (incoordination of lower limbs, late learning to talk in children, with incoordination of tongue movements - hasty, incoherent speech) childish behaviour.  These combined with itchy Eczema, must scratch until it bleeds.
  (Frank KUHLMAN, HL. 3/93)

 CICUTA VIROSA

Epileptic attacks: from injuries; from cranial injuries in children.  Old people with Arteriosclerosis and obstructed cerebral arteries, which makes them childish.  Convergent squint.  ‘Delusion, home, thinks is away from’.  This we see often in old people.  They want to go home; they feel like a child and start talking about their parents and siblings.  That is the essence of Cicuta.  Children deprived of Oxygen during the birth process (by breach presentation,  long time in birth canal etc.)  later develop convergent Strabismus, Epilepsy.
   (Alfons GEUKENS, HL. 3/93)

Eruptions without itching, (like Cuprum aceticum) with moist pustular eruptions.  (Cuprum aceticum with dry, psoriatic eruptions)
   (Rajan SANKARAN, HL. 1/93)

 CIMICIFUGA

Sad during labor with fear that something will happen to the baby.

Soreness of the parts lain on; indeed the muscles lain on jerk.

The headaches are formidable; it causes a headache as quickly as Glonoine and few medicines cause such intense and persistent pains in the eyeballs.  “Not as good as Bryonia when serous tissues are involved; but far superior toBryonia in its influences on nerve tissues” (HALE)

Left infra-mammary pain, especially in unmarried females (HERING, HUGHES)

Lumbago and sub-acute rheumatism from muscular over-exertion.

The British Journal of Homeopathy reported a case of pain in the chest and left arm with resluting deformity of the clavicle and the fierst and second ribs due to muscular contraction after dragging a very heavy weight, cured byCimicifuga

Excessive muscular soreness after Dancing, Skating and other violent exercise (ALLEN)

The most detailed case record of a cure by Cimicifuga was published by Dr.MADDEN,  a homœopath.  He had dieted severely because of over-weight and lost two Stones in less than three months.  He developed a pain in the chest, between the middle of the Sternum and the Epigastrium, much worse by lying down in bed, but also worse walking fast or uphill.  There was no Dyspnoea but the pain could spread up the Oesophagus, extend across the shoulders and down both arms.  Unlike Angina, he could walk off the pain.  With the body fixed, exercise with the arms never brought on the pain.  Four years of consultations and suggestions from colleagues brought no relief.  He argued with himself that he was suffering from Myalgia of the Diaphragm and prescribed himself 3 drops of Cimicifuga mother tincture.  He had immediate relief, but began proving the remedy, developing pain in the Eyeballs, later cured by a potency.  Nowadays we should have made a diagnosis of Achalasia of the Cardia.  But then there were no X-rays of Barium swallows, and fortunately perhaps for him, no surgeon waiting to do Heller’s operation of surgical Cardiomyotomy.  (My most recent case of Achalasia of the cardias, supported by X-rays, did very well over a period of ten years, on the occasional dose of Arsenicum 200.  In this case the food that always stuck at the lower end of the Oesophagus was fish.)

 CINA

Bad mood, contrary, restless, refuses to be touched or caressed, and desires many things, which are quickly rejected once offered.  Grinding of teeth, itching of anus and nose.      (DG)

 CLEMATIS

It has one strong mental symptom which makes me give Clematis if I see it.  They cannot bear being alone.  They dread being alone.  They almost equally dread having company, so where are you‌  It is very difficult.  But this is what they tell you.  They are irritable and they are angry, and rather fretful, and hate to admit that they dread to be alone, but if they have to be alone very long this mood is followed by great apprehension, sometimes a lot of weeping, homesickness and trembling of the whole body.  And they weep until they are absolutely exhausted.

Now you very seldom see a Clematis patient without some sort of eruption.  And the most common one is small, itching crusts in the scalp, really quite severe itching.  Incidentally they are quite upset by this because they cannot get rid of it.  They have another funny thing - I have met this once or twice, actually - they have  a pustular rash around the loins, only there.  It is tender to touch.  They are always rather ashamed of this rash because it looks horrible and they do not show you if possible, but they may show you because they are rather worried about it.

Toothache quite unbearable on lying down at night.  It is all right in the day, but at night it is quite awful.  Another strange thing is that these patients either draw in cold air, as cold as they can find it or they drink very cold water.  Both of which I would have thought would have increased their toothache, but apparently it does not.  They have one other odd thing.  They have a swelling of the inguinal glands very often, and these become awfully sensitive while they are walking, these glands are also worse in bed.
They have very definite urinary symptoms.  At the beginning of urination they get a sort of burning sensation, and after they have passed water and think they have finished this sensation still goes on.  They complain a lot that the pain sticks in the Urethra for quite a long time after they have passed water.  They feel as if the urethra is going to close up and that they will not be able to pass water.  It does not happen, but they do get this feeling of constriction.  Also, they very seldom quite empty the Bladder, for the flow is very slow - takes a very long time.

I do not know a Bladder or Kidney remedy that has not got some kind of skin eruption among its symptoms.
  (M.G.BLACKIE, BHJ. 1/78)

 COCA

Constitutional remedy for individuals who are ill at ease in society.    (DG)

 COCCULUS INDICUS

A person in a martyr or victim role who has a “used up” quality.  Her inner voice, however, constantly tells her to keep up and stay strong.  This leads to exhaustion and sometimes ertigo. (Vertigo and motion sickness need not be present to prescribe Cocculus).  There can be three mental types:  those with cloudiness or stupefaction; those with anxiety episodes; the depressive type.

Cocculus patients appear to be mild people, but often there is an underlying anger about all the suffering they feel they have endured for their loved ones.  They tend to have eating disorders and may be thin or obese.
   (Ananda ZAREN, HT. Oct/91)

The seed  contains a powerful convulsive poison, picrotoxin.  The drug was formerly abused by its addition to bear or porter for the purpose of hocussing prospective victims of robbery in low dives.  A more permissible use it that of stupefying fish by throwing the entire fruits into water.

Affinity with the CNS; with the motor cells producing tonic spasms, giving way to
clonic spasms and later paralysis, with the sensorium, leading to confusion, stupor and unconsciousness; with the vital centres in the Medulla, causing respiratory and cardiovascular disorders; with the digestive tract, inducing Nausea, Vomiting and severe Colic.  Appears intoxicated, with slurred, difficult speech and slow answereing.  Slow movements.  Limbs stiff or even paralysed.
Patient looks frightened or site in deep reverie.  Slow comprehension, word-hunting, unable to finish sentences, or, very talkative, joking and singing.  Sensitive to insults, quick tempered.  Unconcerned about himself, worried about others.

Feels hungry, but loathes food; gags at mere thought or mention of food.

  Cold sweat on either hand.

General complaints from loss of sleep, but occipital headaches may come on after sleep. Stiff, lame, numb, tremulous.  Affected limbs cannot be flexed when straightened out, except by forceful passive movement, which may extort cries of pain.  Knees creak and crack with every movement and can scarcely support the sufferer who staggers from side to side in danger of falling.
  Sensitive ulcers.
  (D.M.GIBSON, HG. 10/73)

A good remedy for motion sickness on winding roads.    (DG)

 COCCUS CACTI

Sensation of a foreign body between upper lid and eyeball, verified many times.  It has relieved the distress from foreign bodies lodged in the eye, that resist the speed.  A useful remedy to carry when travelling with children when a cinder (or a similar particle) gets into the child’s eye, after a few doses of this remedy the iritation ceases.
  (Guy B.STEARNS, HG. 4/80)

 COFFEA CRUDA

Coffea is a great worker.  Its power to think and to debate are heightened.  It has a supersanity and its memory is phenomenal.  It will quote you oppositely from the poetry of any period.  It labours incessantly for some great cause and then breaks down with Insomnia thousand thinking of a thousand things in bed.  Hypersensitive to noise, to joy, to the pains of Neuralgias.
  (E.W.HUBBARD, HG. 6/78)

Patient excited, talkatives, on the go; constant quick movements.  Eats and drinks hurriedly.  Phenomenal memory, can quote poetry at great length.  Is apt to labor incessantly for some good cause to the point of a ‘break-down’ with accompanying dullness, gloom, constant yawning and stretching, drowsiness by day and undue wakefulness at night.  May feel hot, but at the same time shiver with cold extremities.

Hunger is often excessive, but with an attack of migraine there is loathing for all food and drink.  In fever thirst is constant, especially during the sweating stage.

Can read very small, print and hear sounds inaudible to others.

Dysmenorrhoea, with hypersensitive parts, cannot wear a napkin.

Pruritis, but the skin is too sensitive to allow scratching.

  (D.M.GIBSON, HG. 7/73)

Useful remedy for babies who are lean, nervous and insomniac, especially during teething.      (DG)

 COLCHICUM AUTUMNALE

If the patient lies perfectly still, the disposition to vomit is less urgent.  (H.C.ALLEN)
This could level to use in Sea sickness.  The BMJ printed an Editorial on the value of Colchicine in familial Mediterranean Fever.  This illness of recurrent bouts of abdominal pain and fever is complicated by Pleurisy and Arthritis affecting one or more large joints.  It is hereditary disorder transmitted by a recessive gene.  Amyloidosis may result and is fatal in seven years.  In the last 3 years, thirteen different authors have reported that Colchicine in a daily dose of 1 - 1.5 mg. will prevent attacks in most patients.  It is interesting to note that here is a drug that can compensate for a genetic defect.
   (Frank BODMAN, BHJ. 2/76)

 COLOCYNTH

Sciatica:  Right sided; touch agg. but lying on painful side > ; flexing thigh against abdomen > ; warmth of bed <.
  (V.GHEGAS, HL. 3/93)

Feel insulted (Capsicum also imagines everyone is insulting him); injustice done to them.  Take things to heart, withdraw, do not express anger, dwell on the insult and consequently suffer Cramps, Diarrhoea, Colitis, etc.  (Nat-m, holds grudge).  Long term vexation e.g. have to do a job but not given the power or proper resources.  Everyone expects them to do a good job; they try their best and suffer silently.  Then Cramp or Neuralgia.  Sensitive to injustice to oneself (Causticum, social injustice), suppressed emotions (Staphysagria).
   (Bill GRAY, HL. 2 & 3/94)

In the hospital, when I started practising, each time my duties brought me to a patient suffering from Colic and sitting in bed “Clutching his pillow” - which we called among ourselves “the pillow syndrome” - a dose of Colocythisbrought spectacular results.

In cases of Low Back Pain, where the patient presents with intermittent, shooting pain, “like a knife thrust”  in the patient’s own words with or without movement, the remedy is not Bryonia, but Colocynthis.  This remedy never needs to be repeated, must be given time to work.  In general, a positive effect is apparent after 3 or 4 days but, in  certain serious cases, the dose must be left to work for 3 months before the patient feels no more pain in his back.  (InSulphur, the pain in itself is not intense but rather of the intermittent lancinating type.  With Colocynthis, there is a single violent attack which only recurs from time to time.)  The pain of Colocynthis is like a flash of lightning or an electrical discharge, whether it be in the Lumbar region, at the level of the Sciatic nerve, or at that of the Trigeminal nerves.  In the face, the pain is on the left, at the level of the upper lip, and the patient describes it as being like an electrical discharge.  The effect, too, is very spectacular, like lightning.
  (HUI BON HOA, BHJ. 3/77)

This elderly thin woman walks with her back bent at a ninety degree angle, but after a few steps her back becomes straight.  After a few more steps her back is bent again.  This process keeps repeating itself.  She doesn’t lag behind nor does she step out of line from the single file made by the figures walking behind one another.  It is the courageous Colocynthis, energetic and impressive.
  (G.URETZKY, LIGA 1995)

Remedy for spasmodic, cramping pain which comes after anger is “swallowed”.  Anger mixed with a feeling of indignation.    (DG)

 CONIUM MACULATUM

If you have a patient who wakes with perspiration, Conium is your first thought.  For Sleeplessness because of perspiration,  Conium is the number one remedy.

If there occurs any change of personality, or any change of function of the organism after losing one’s partner, think of Conium.  Tumors, Prostate troubles might arise after such a causation, also Uterine or Breast problems.

Fastidious behaviour with suppressed sexuality.  Fanatical ideas about spirituality meditation, religious practices with repressed sexuality.  Fixed ideas on the mental level equate with Tumors on the physical level.  Conium should be considered for people who are remorseful about their sexuality since they think it is sinful.

Vertigo while lying down or while rising up from bed - irrespective of whether it arises from a cervical syndrome.

  Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

The triad of Vertigo, Perspiration and Palpitation after stool is surely Conium. Vertigo, hot flushes, numb thighs, pain in heart region during Climaxis.
  (Vassilis GHEGAS, SIM. 2/94)

 CUPRUM METALLICUM

“My experience is that it is good to keep in mind the Cuprum element for children with very painful Dentition and an aggravation of the general state whenever a new tooth erupts.”
   (Sunil ANAND, HL.1/95)

When feeling awful the patient chats quite incoherently, never sure what he is chatting about and it is difficult to stop him.  If  extremely ill, however, they tend to become delirious, they cannot remember who they are or where they are, or anything about themselves, otherwise they are fretful and disinclined to work.  Curiously, they are also bored stiff if they are idle.  Therefore, they are always doing something.  If they are not tossing about in bed they are up and down or they are moving about but they are never content to do nothing.  Compelled to do something, either tossing about or reading or sorting things.  Either burst into tears or amusing and show off with a sort of buffonery.

Nearly always complains of metallic taste.  There is only one other drug that I know that complains consistently of a metallic taste and that is Rhus tox.

They eat very fast, incidentally, and it makes their pains worse as a rule.  They are greedy patients really, and have not got a true appetite.  They come down to a meal and think they will finish it as quickly as possible, and they gobble it down.

An army man who used to choke during his regimental dinners, was helped by Cuprum.  Sudden painful contractures of upper Eyelids, must be propped up in order to see, if let go, again contracture.
A stage singer with a beautiful voice, was liable to spasm of her legs.  When she was about to sing, her leg would go rigid and she was not sure if she would be able to walk across the platform.  She said it was not painful, it was just terrible.  ‘It may catch  me at any time, and especially if I am slightly nervous’.  Cuprum greatly benefited her.

A blonde charmer; the hysterical blonde who has never been crossed.

A spoiled brat who needs a spanking and craves one “off the handle”.

Loquacious, sullen, head-strong, malicious, morose, with fixed ideas, terror of death.  Tricky  and spoiled.  Disorderly, changeable dissatisfied.

Maniacal rage; cramps of spirit as well as body.  Wild-eyed; mad fits.  They stage scenes; bellow like a calf; lie like one dead, blue and alarming and rigid.

  Ecstasy with quivering.

Greed, Malice, desire to injure, to run away and scream, to escape.  Mimicry.

Shrinks from people. Mimicry. Emotional Nausea more than any remedy.

  Nervous prostration in the young.

Brain metastases; Delirium with distorted face ending in sweat.
  Uremia.

Copper is homœopathically indicated in diseases that show themselves in irregular attacks of similar groups of symptoms.

“...the strength of the patient suddenly sinks, he cannot stand upright, his expression is altered, his eyes sunk in, the face bluish and icy cold, as also the hands, with coldness of the rest of the body: hopeless Discouragement and Anxiety, with dread of suffocation, half stupefied and insensible, he moans or cries in a hollow, hoarse voice, without making any distinct complaints, except when asked: on touching the Precordial region he cries out”. (HAHNEMANN, Lesser Writings) a striking picture of Cuprum and myocardial infarction.

From experience it is a fact that Cuprum relieves the Spasms in Asthma.

Convulsive states, such as in the Toxaemias of pregnancy, should alert one to Cuprum.
It has worked wonders in many cases of  Dysmenorrhoea.  HAHNEMANN recommended it in Influenza.

 CYCLAMEN

He is hysterically immersed in his thoughts which are obsessive and incoherent.  He has pangs of conscience that he did not do what he ought to have done.  For example:  his mother died.  He is tortured by the thought that he failed to keep her alive.  A dear one was taken to hospital.  He ought to have prevented the disease.  But he did not know his dear one had been ill.  Emotional torments and pangs of conscience like these that one can’t get rid of are the clue to Cyclamen.

The 80-year-old patient who visited her doctor regularly looked dejected.  Her husband had died.

‘Perhaps his time had come, you know, his age’, the doctor was sympathetic.

‘He went in for drinking and that morning he felt bad.  He asked me to give him 100 grammes of Vodka’.

‘Did you have 100 grammes of vodka‌’

The face of Cyclamen reflected deep grief.
(G.URETZKI, BHJ. 1/92)

Patients’ expressions which clearly show a Cyclamen mentality:

I hate letting people down, it can worry me for days.

I wish I could be less preoccupied with myself.  I have always been very reserved emotionally.  I am too hard on myself; a friend let me down recently, and I found myself blaming myself, I felt I must have done something to cause it.

I have a friend who is suffering from Depression, and I feel it is my duty to visit her every day and give her my support.  It is draining me, but I couldn’t cope with the guilt if I didn’t go every day.

You can’t just write people off.

I have never liked entertaining, because I like to do things perfectly, and conditions have never allowed that.
A friend’s husband has died, now I have someone else to take under my wing.

I have always found it difficult to do nothing, there is always the thought in the back of my mind; what should I be doing.
