GAERTNER

Especially indicated in children. Multiple food allergies, eager to please (like Puls.), intelligent, sensitive, fearful, tidy, conformist.  Communicative, obliging.  The child is sickly, pale, lacks stamina, dark rings around eyes.  Prone to Colds.  Allergic ‘shiners’.   Poor appetite.  “In all varieties of Neurasthenia, I know of no remedy to compare with the  Gaertner Nosode.=: C.E.WHEELER”) Anaemia.  Cannot digest Fats.  Teething troubles where Cham. fails.  Asthma, Eczema, Lichen planus.
                                                                                                 (Richard LAING, BHJ. 1/95)

Under-nutrition with precocious mental development, often with Ear, Nose and Throat problems.
                                                                                                (C.O.KENNEDY, BHJ, 3/88)

Useful in many childhood illnesses, when the most noticeable feature is Malnutrition.  Also in old people, when malignant disease with emaciation is present.

Children hypersensitive emotionally and physically.  Inability to digest Fat leading to such conditions as Coeliac disease, Ketosis, chronic Gastroenteritis,  Tabes mesenterica.  A craving for Oat meal has been observed.
                                                                                                 (D.M.GIBSON, HG, 8/1976)

 GALLIC ACID

Extreme fear of being alone.  (One patient was so fearful that he placed an ad in the newspaper for a room-mate every time his living companion went on vacation.)  Insists on being constantly watched.  Characterised by violent anger; often has a tense and angry appearence; one can perceive tightness in the body or in the jaws.  The movement of the jaw is often mechanical, as if it were locking and unlocking.  The anger is ever present, and not episodic.  It does not have a hysteric quality.  Rude and cursing.

The anger is diverted towards others, not towards oneself resulting in self-injury.  Might suppress their anger to reduce others into becoming close to them; behaving in a calm and peaceful manner until the relationship is established and then they will be unable to prevent the expression of hostility.  Other confirmatory symptoms include restlessness at night, and jerking of limbs.

By comparison, Stramonium is characterised by terror, seemingly unrelated to any experiences in the conscious state.  Many fears.  Initially the inner state of terror is manifest as nightmares or violent and aggressive behaviour.  Face and body posture expressive of fear.  Initially daylight and company of people assuage the fear, which shows up at night.  At a later stage, these factors are no longer among people - the fear becomes a hysteric panic.  Paralysed by fear.

The aggressive behaviour may be directed towards others or towards self-banging one’s head, burning parts of self, punching on the wall with fist etc.  Self-injury is a point of differential with Gallic acid.

Belladonna has visual hallucinations of fires, animals and monsters.  Also, they are sensitive to light, noise, weather changes, motion or jarring etc.  Gallic acid does not have the visual hallucinations or the sensitivities of Belladonna.
                                                                                                  (Ananda ZAREN, HL. 3/93)

Very often there is an aetiology of sudden abandonment or separation from the primary care person. (Ananda ZAREN).   This can occur from illness, injury, death, divorce, birth of a sibling or change of occupation.  This sudden loss of a care-giver precipitates a fear of being alone, sleep disorders and violence. Young children of working mothers feel abandoned and then refuse to let the mother out of sight and demand constant attention.  Adult Gallic acid patients arrange to live and work constantly with people so that they are never alone.  When playing with other children, they are the leaders, and they want to be the centre of attention.  They demand to be first, they have to win and be the best, and will cheat at games and at school to achieve this.  They may steal things and deny their culpability.  They instigate a fight but claim someone else started it.

Compulsive behaviour, touching and smelling things like Syphilinum; tongue lapping and saliva bubbling from the mouth when talking (Ananda ZAREN).  Speak aloud even when not angry.
                                                                                               (Michael TRAUB, SIM. 2/93)

 GAMBOGIA

Promiscuous, suicidal.  There is an aggressive energy about them.  A ‘mad’ remedy.

                                                                                                                       (HL, 2 & 3/94)

 GELSEMIUM

Cowardice. Ailments from anticipation and Fear of losing control - are three important rubrics for this remedy.  Often patients might present a temperament of courage and great self-control.  They take up challenging situations to compensate for the lack of courage etc.  They are ‘Afraid of being afraid’.
(Derek BRIGGS, HL. 4/93)

Gelsemium is sweet, soft and easy-going.  During labor, posterior position of Foetus, hence pain in the back.  Trembling with fear, Os rigid. (HL. 2 & 3/94)

Cowardly, full of nervous fears and inclined to fright.  There is no logic in his thoughts.  He may be shocked by unfortunate news because he thinks the same might happen to him.  He trembles when he gets excited.  When he calms down at last, his hands continue to tremble while speaking.  At the moment he falls asleep, he thinks he is going to die.  Frightened, he jumps off the bed to make sure his Heart is beating.  He is inclined to Hypertension. (G.URETZKY, LIGA, 1995)

Respiratory paralysis (from inhaling smoke etc., may be encountered in fire-crew members)  (William A. BOYSON, JAIH. 5-6/67)

You can sum up Gelsemium in three “D’s”: Dizzy, Drowsy, Dull.

The urine is always light coloured, never dark, even when there is fever.  Anyone who prescribes Gelsemium for a patient with dark urine, needs a refresher course!

A great remedy for trembling; but note: external trembling.  One can say that many Gelsemium patients especially with Fever, complain that everything is trembling.

Everytime a patient tells you that he has had a sudden sorrow, ask him how it started.  Often it started from the shock of a bad news.  In such cases, give the XM. (In the case or real grief:  Ignatia.)

A specific for fear of examinations; also before public appearance/performance. I give a 200 in the morning of the event, does not even need a repetition.  In the case of singing, when you can’t get a sound out, Gelsemium maintains the voice of a nightingale!

Fear if being alone; wants someone near, even one who does not speak will do.

Fear of losing his self-control and his calm.

Fear of lightning; what a dreadful coward!  A real living barometer.  Feels all the fluctuations of the weather very quickly, especially when the barometer falls.

Worse thinking of his troubles.

Unfortunately, he always feels better after taking alcohol.  A patient of mine said: “I take the tiniest possible glass of kirsch every morning and afterwards it is absolutely marvellous, I feel that I have wings all day to do the housework.”  That is really dangerous.  She started with a tiny glass and ended in a litre, died of Anasarca in the greatest moral and material misery!  The constant repetition of her voice immediately antidoted the effect of Gelsemium. (Pierre SCHMIDT, HG, 6/77)

A remedy against Poliomyelitis.  It is a great help in writer’s cramp and relieves infants who, out of fear of falling, cling to the crib when they are picked up.  (DG)

 GENTIANA LUTEA

In this we have another remedy for Bee stings and allergic reactions.  The shade of difference between Apis and Gentiana make the study worthwhile.  With Bee stings, the more emphais there is on swelling and redness the more appropriate is Apis.  In Gentiana the swelling is not severe, but the reactions is.  The symptoms resemble Anaphylaxis or acute allergic reaction.

The leading symptoms are:

Panic, alarm, confusion.  Lack of connection to people and feelings.  Waves of anxiety and panic through the stomach, stomach acidity.  Heart rate accelerated, pain extending from the heart to the top of the left shoulder.  Panic attacks in Ulcer patients, accompanied by excess secretion of  Hydrochloric acid. (Mathew WOOD, HOM. 1/89)

 GLONOINUM

The central idea is congestion; congestion of thoughts, forgetfulness, difficult thinking and comprehending.  ‘Forgets well-known streets’.  This is the beginning of Glonoin pathology, may later become a neurotic condition.  Suspect serious disease when presented with such symptoms: e.g. Prolactinoma or Carotid Aneurysm.  Sensation of enlargement/extension.

Glonoin is not really indicated in psychotic conditions, we always find a physical base.  Typically, Hypertension, Arteriosclerosis.  Menopause, Hyperaemia.

Fear of Apoplexy typical of Glonoin may arise from real pathologies or as an unjustified premonition.  This fear arises in typical aggravation situations like in the Sun, near a fire-place, etc.

Headaches or hot sensation after Hysterectomy.  Prolactinoma (with sensation of enlargement of head.  Headaches +, milk in non-pregnant women)

Glonoin prevents the loss of energy when the patient is near death (hot, congestion, throbbing Carotids).

Morphologically, Glonoin may be of two types: the plethoric, congested one and the ‘l’ pale lanky, emaciated one.

The former type has a state of tension and excitement.  Sometimes he has annoying palpitations, with heat flushes from the chest to the head, sweat and paroxysms of transient mental confusion.  In the worst moments he feels he might lose his senses and he might grasp at something; as if he is losing contact with reality, everything looks strange, he loses track of where he is.  Even under normal conditons he often loses his way.

They are easily confused with Sulphur, considering the physical aspect, the state of congestion made worse by heat, hot feet with tendency to uncover them in bed, mental state of apparent indifference sometimes “theorizing”, etc.

May be confused with Lachesis.  He may present with a certain amount of loquacity, sense of humor, with witticisms and joking, excitement with anxiety when he wakes, intolerance of contradiction, abuse of alcohol - only to mention a few symptoms.  Both remedies are worse from emotional excitement.

He may be irritable, especially when contradicted, assuring a dictatorial attitude, may be with digestive troubles and distension - easy to think as a Lycopodium.

He may be devoted to work, fastidious, very demanding of himself and others, sleepy after eating, Insomnia, Constipation, etc. - like Nux vomica.

Indeed it shares features of many Polychrests.  The lanky, pale type with shining eyes showing the typical speed of thought but that is expressed with difficulty.  He always has a worrying, frowning face, as if he were brooding over some offfence.  In fact, he recalls long forgotten offences, or he thinks of the persons who had offended him.  This depression prevails and he finally decides to put an end to his miserable existence.

The tendency to withdraw, to fix the mind on past grievances and the aversion to talk bring to mind Natrum muriaticum.  If we add the Tachycardia, pulsations in various parts, pulsating Headaches.  Both remedies look more and more alike.

The anxieties and fears are always accompanied by Tachycardia, pulsations everywhere, constriction of the throat, air hunger, flushes of heat to the head, sweat...

The acute panic attacks in their variations lead one to remedies like Aconite, Belladonna, Stramonium, or Hyoscyamus which help little, since Glonoin should be the remedy.

The Guiding Symptoms mentions the AF of the Glonoin pathology as: mental excitement, Fright, Fear, Contusions and their late consequenes.  In these causations we think only of Aconite, Arnica orOpium, but never of Glonoin!

In Glonin there is always a clear and precise etiology: fright, sudden, unexpected, unforeseen accidents on a state of mental excitement - suffering less sudden but extending for a long time.

Fright, accidents or mental suffering with a precise characteristic: the lack of an immediate reaction, a sense of fear that instead of taking a natural outlet, goes inward and paralyzes the deep emotional sensitivities.

Incurable, serious disease in close relative - the living daily in touch with suffering waiting only for the worst - causes a continuous trauma, a sense of impotence and the patient feels a need to turn to God or feels betrayed, forsaken and lives in torment.

Unresolved fears and shocks running for years.

The resulting inner turmoil causes Tachycardias and Arrhythmias, Hypertension with tumultous palpitations that shake the chest and extend to the throat causing a constriction there, preventing breathing, causing panic and terror.

The curative effects of Glonoin have been experienced in:

States of anxiety of variable intensity, even anguish.  Obsessions, ideas of being possessed by demoniac forces, despair of salvation, suicidal and murderous impulses - mostly on seeing sharp weapons.  Panic attacks, causeless terror, fear of losing one’s mind, Anorexia Nervosa.

Marked Asthenia, Hypotonia of the limbs, Formication and diminished sensation of the face, limbs and half of the body; progressive Muscular Atrophy, Multiple Sclerosis, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis.

Hypertension, Apoplexy, Aphasia, Paralysis, Convulsions, Epilepsy spasms and painful contractions, restless legs at night, facial tics, sensaions of sudden electric shocks in different parts. Paralysis from cold - erratic neuralgias, sudden needle like stitches and anywhere.

Congestive, pulsating frontal or occipital aches, bursting, pains, tightness or ‘grasped tight’ sensation in occipital and cervical regions; headaches ending in vomitting, improved by sleep and cold applications.

Dizziness, faintness with tremulous vision, as if losing contact with reality, knows not where he is. Must shake himself  and his head to regain control.

Blood shot eyes with burning and sensation of sand, swollen eyelids; relapsing uveitis; retinal haemorrhage.

Paroxysms of cough Laryngismus, Whooping cough, Bronchial Asthma with extreme Anxiety and scarcity of objective reports.

Simple and paroxysmal Tachycardias, atrial and ventricular Extrasystoles.  Angina pectoris, Myocardial infarction.  Heart failure with Peripheral Oedema.

Insomnia, until 2-3 a.m.  Distressing dreams or nightmares; psycho-physical asthenia on waking.
Dysmenorrhoea with vomiting and shooting abdominal pain.

      Incomplete erections, premature ejaculation, Impotence.

      Chronic Pancreatitis.

      Hepatic Cirrhosis and Ascites.

Hydronephrosis from Neoplasms in the Ureters.

Congenital: Atrophy and Agenesis of Cerebellum Vermis, Mucopolysaccharidosis,  Down’s syndrome.

Swollen and painful joints, large and small joints,  acute and chronic backache, Sciatica, Ankylosing Spondylitis.

Erythemas, Eczema with Fissures and bleeding with intense itching.  Causeless itching in circumscribed spots.  Cracks at muco-cutaneous junctions.  Diffuse Subcutaneous Cysts.  Relapsing deep Ulcers with clear margins, laying bare the underlying muscle, with poor secretion,  the areola is red, bluish-black, similar to an explosion effect.  Herpes Simplex, Zoster.

Malignant Tumors, even in advanced stages.

AIDS - remission of physical symptoms characteristic by Asthenia, night fevers and opportunistic infections.  An improved mental state and increase of T4 cells resulted.

The family history in Glonoin patients is one of serious diseases:  malignancies, Hypertension, Myocardial Infarction, Cerebral Icterus even in young age, Epilepsy, Hepatic Cirrhosis, Diabetes, Syphilis, Tuberculosis.  The serious family history and many mental symptoms are very similar to Carcinosin. (Giampiero ASCANI, LIGA. 1995)

 GNAPHALIUM

Sciatica with numbness; numbness alternates with pain.  Pain + numbness + diarrhoea.
(Aesc. Pain + Numbness + Haemorrhoids)  (Vassilis GHEGAS, HL. 3/93)

I have used it in Diabetic Neuropathy with numbness down the left lower limb.(David WEMBER, JAIH. 1/92)

 GOSSYPIUM

During labor, too weak even to get out of bed.  Nausea.  Weak contractions.(Ananda ZAREN, HL. 2 & 3/94)

 GRAPHITES

They are more perhaps very sad, than very depressed,  if you can see a difference.  They sit down and are just sad.  They sit and think of how soon they are going to die and of how soon this illness in going to kill them rather than being melancholic and gloomy.  They then worry about whether they will go to heaven if they do die.  If depressed,  characteristically, they cannot make up their minds.  They postpone deciding about things and they get slow and miserable and depressed and think they ought to do it.  Their relations are trying to press them to do something and they do not know what to do.

Graphites patients are better in the evening.  They cheer up as a rule then if they are depressed and sometimes you can get work out of them in the evening, and they usually sleep very well.  They wake up in the morning absolutely as bad as ever, but you can gradually push them along.  They are better for warmth and they are much better for food; the Graphites patient likes his food and improves after it.  Strongly enough, especially when they are depressed they are chilly and at the same time they have an amount of air hunger.  The only thing they complain of at night when they sleep like a log, is that they are uncomfortably hot in bed.  They are easily overheated by exertion. (M.G.BLACKIE, BHJ. 4/78)

Graphites is a constitutional remedy that corresponds well to children who are rather heavy, chilly, and who tend to suffer from skin problems and constipation.  They are sensitive to music which make them cry.  This is an excellent remedy for Herpes of the Cornea.                                                                                                                  (DG)

Graphites (granulating scars; “I prescribed Graphites CM in treatment of Keloid scars, almost always successfully”); Thiosinamin. (Post operative Adhesions, Scars); Dros. (Tubercular scars);Diphtherin (keloid scars); Hell. (intracranial scars after concussion). Dr.PASCHERO claimed that Carcinosin 200 given pre-operatively reduced the number of Keloid scars after plastic surgery performed at the University of Buenos Aires.  (D.M.FOUBISTER, BHJ. 1/1975)
